Setting realistic goals

I don’t know about you but I have a bad habit of setting crazy goals. Just this morning I wrote down everything I wanted to do by the end of the month and it was enough to make my head explode. For example, I put down that I wanted to finish two sites. Based on what I have in my head, that would be over 200 new web pages. With about 10 days left in the month, that comes to about 20 pages a day. *bangs head on desk*

This mountain of work pretty much put a damper on the rest of the day. How the hell would I be able to come up with 20 content rich, original pages a day? The simple answer is that I can’t – this is one goal that just isn’t realistic.

Instead, I decided to make scaled down versions of the site and then add to them throughout June. This way they would be functional sooner PLUS I’d be able to add content regularly and Google loves it when you do that. It’s not the idea solution but it will get the job done.

One perfect step at a time

One thing I try to do is to break down my big goals into a series of little ones. Sometimes these steps can be as small as one new blog post or one new web page. Alone, those simple tasks don’t really count for much but when you add them all up, wow, now you are getting somewhere.

There is a catch, however, and it is this: I try to do everything as perfectly as I can. Sure, I screw up as much as anyone but if my successes outnumber my failures, then I’ve done alright.

Now that I think about it there is one more catch and that is that you mustn’t spend a crazy amount of time on any one thing. If you do, you end up bogging down your entire plan. There comes a time when you have to be done with whatever it is and move on.
